Metformin is used with a proper diet and exercise programme and possibly with other medications to control high blood sugar. It is mainly used in patients with type 2 diabetes. The essence of controlling high blood sugar is to help prevent kidney damage, blindness, nerve problems, loss of limbs, and sexual function problems.
Maintaining healthy blood sugar levels is very important for your overall health, as it is widely reported. A consistent rise in blood sugar can lead to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Research, as reported by Healthline, has shown that Okra is very beneficial to diabetes patients as it helps decrease sugar absorption in the digestive tract, leading to a more stable blood sugar response.
Unfortunately, Okra can also have a negative effect on diabetes patients. According to research reported by Healthline and MedicalNewsToday, it was discovered that it interferes with metformin, a common diabetes medication. The researchers discovered that okra solution appeared to block the absorption of metformin, suggesting that the plant may reduce the drug’s effectiveness.
Therefore, diabetes patients who are on Metformin are not advised to eat okra.
